During my stay in Singapore, I made the most of what it could offer in terms of cuisine and local food. I’ve always been a fan of exotic food, (except balut though) and although my taste has been somewhat limited because of being a vegetarian, I was happy to know that it didn’t hinder me from enjoying Singapore food at all! :)
On my first day, we ate at a hawker’s centre (a group of food stalls) called Makansutra Gluttons Bay near Esplanade and Marina Square. The place was full of tourists and workers alike looking for a cheap decent meal. We arrived at exactly dinner time that’s why it was more crowded than usual.
At first, it was a bit hard for me to order because I didn’t know which meal had meat in them and which one didn’t. I couldn’t eat at the pinoy stall because all it served was liempo and fried chicken. So I went from one stall after the other and finally found one which specifically said in their menu: No Pork or Lard. Yey!!! I ordered Kway Teow Vegetables from Old Satay Club Mee Goreng. And true to the menu, it had no meat at all! In fact, the server even asked me if it was okay to put egg on it. Cool right? :) The taste was just to my liking. Not too salty but not too bland either. My friends warned me that SG food can be very bland but mine was just right.
I was lucky to have tasted something good on my first meal so I didn’t get discouraged to try other meals. And it came at a really cheap price too! Only SGD5.00 for a complete meal. I think the only thing I can complain about is the lack of tables and chairs. We literally had to stalk people who were almost done eating so we could seat on their place immediately after they left.
For day 2, I ate more food than usual since I was carbo loading for my run the next day. However, I had the distinct misfortune of tasting the worst food I ever had to eat yet. The eggs looked normal enough and Tara was so convincing when she told me that it was yummy and worth trying. So gullible tourist that I was, I tried it… OMG!!!! It was horrible!!!!
It isn’t cooked at all!!!! Seriously though, it wasn’t the soft boiled egg I was expecting since it was soup-ish rather than boiled. Acck. I had to endure eating the whole thing, and even when I put soy sauce on it, it still tasted like a protein supplement, just a bit saltier. So, no, this isn’t in my “taste this again” list.
The bread though was a different story, it was delicious. So it half made up for the horrible egg. Haha. We ate all this in Toast Box, one of the frequently seen food joints in Singapore.
Another food haven in Singapore is Holland Village. Lots of different cuisines in one place. There was Mexican food, Italian, American, French, and a whole lot more. Since Mj and I wanted to load up carbs as much as we could, we went for pizza + pasta. Here I am enjoying the food at Crust Gourmet Pizza Bar.
I ordered Wild Marinated Mushroom mix, Asparagus & Pine Nuts, topped with Parmesan & a drizzle of Truffle Oil on a Béchamel sauce base. I was intrigued with the Béchamel base so I ordered this instead of my trusty Margherita. Unfortunately, asparagus doesn’t smell so good and it has an after taste so I didn’t finish the entire pizza. :( But overall, it was an interesting experience.
So for pasta, we headed to the New York Dessert Cafe for some good ol’ Aglio Olio. It was heavenly! The staff were friendly too and I love how the bell peppers tasted, crunchy but soft. Yumm!
On Sunday, after my successful run, I was super hungry for rice!! Tara brought me to Marché Restaurant in Vivo City and I died and went to veggie heaven!! Hahaha. It works this way: you choose a plate and fill it with as much food as you want. The set up is similar to a market so everything is fresh!
This was my SGD9.00 plate full of sautéed potatoes, tomatoes, greek salad, cauliflower, and potato salad plus SGD2.00 rice. It satisfied my hunger like crazy! Will definitely go back to Marché! :)
So if you guys want to food trip, Singapore is a great place to do that! :) I’ll be making another entry on desserts because I feel like it needs a separate one. :D
